| Description: | Syria's President El Kuwatly arrives in Cairo following a coup by pro-red army officers. Which either makes him a fugitive or a figure head. Establishing shot - President Nasser welcomes President El Kuwatly as he disembarks a plane in Cairo, they are shaking hands and smiling at each other. MCUS - The Egyptian army stands at attention waiting for a review from President Nasser and President El Kuwatly as they kiss each other's cheek. In Washington, meanwhile president Eisenhower charges that Russia’s objective is to seize power in Syria. President Eisenhower comments on the Syrian Crisis: "Now first of all the situation there is that we were accused of a lot of things, which are obviously a smoke screen, behind which people who have leftist leanings are trying to build up their power. The pattern, that is seemingly emerging is an old one by the Soviets to insert or offer economic or military aid, and through doing so to penetrate the receiving country with their agents for these to get into power and to provide stooges that will do their will and finally to take over this country. We don't know exactly what is happening. Frankly what were doing is getting every piece of information we can daily. We consult with others that are interested and have knowledge and trying to keep abreast of the situation. It is not, one of those instances at present, that justify any kind of action at all under the mid east doc." | |
