MS Teacher and 3 pupils sit at table practicing saying words simaltaneously in spoken speech and in sign language; one kid has on headphones, other two have hearing aids;on the table are tambourines, a doll etc. Voice over of teacher talking about the students. CU teacher using sign language. CU boy responds pointing to object on table. LS pan from river to brick houses by riverside, back walled gardens, at the Tewmans' residence. Voice over says Mrs T heard of this method in America and hired a teacher to instruct her own deaf child and two others. MSs CUs interview with Mrs Tewman, who explains "cued speech." She tells how some spoken sounds cannot be distinguished from each other visually, for example pat / bat / mat, so 'cued speech' uses hand symbols at the same time as the spoken word to show which sound is being used. CUs of pictures from bulletin board in classroom, showing the different hand symbols, etc. CU teacher talks about pupils' progress. Child paying attention in class, pointing. More CUs Mrs T talking. MS to CU teacher gives series of instructions "show me the man" , "Show me the bed" etc. and child points to the objects on table. More of interview with Mrs. Tewman. MSs teacher and kids in classroom; voiceover she talks about where the students may go from here. Mrs Tewman hopes this will be used in some schools to see how helpful it may be there. | |
