| Description: | THAMES FLOOD BARRIERS Scale models used by scientists to research dock building and Thames Barrier. British Transport Docks Research Station studies effects of the sea on structures; docks; beaches; sea wall; etc. Scale models assist in research of dock building and Thames Barrier. Southall, Middlesex At the British Transport Docks Research Station. We see various shots of scientists and engineers looking at large model of a coastal area to discover the best methods for building docks and what effect the sea will have on a structure. Man at side of pool turning on small machine. Pan over to pool, long board rocking, moving water a bit. Shot of other end of pool; with model boat and pier in shallow water. CU same. Then CU another test with miniature tidal water coming in, white strips representing walls and sand on edges of these. ECU end of one of these "walls" - water circling, tiny whirlpool. Scientist in laboratory; sits in front of tank watching artificial wave. CU little ball attached to stick floating on the "wave". A scientist in a white coat looks at a graph coming out of a machine. CU Machine printing out graph. Hands hold up strip of paper to compare with graph. Another experiment : puts small blocks against a tide coming in on another part of the machine. Man stands at end of a tank with water rushing swiftly toward him and away. He keeps adding blocks to the end of the tank. CU putting more blocks in water. Shot of a long row of "waterfalls". Didcot, Oxfordshire Several shots of a working model of the River Thames, from Southend to Teddington, built to studying flooding problems. Shot of model boat floating on model river. Model tanker ships move along the river and men lower a barrier across the flow at one point near Long Reach to prevent the surge of tide going through to London. Two researchers lowering a "dam" into the model river. Commentator talks of a permanent dam fitted with locks and sluices being planned to control the river - probably Thames Barrier. Shot of the model showing the situation of London bridges. Another shot of river; with model bridges over it and blocks at side with name of places on the Thames. CU model of London Bridge. GV looking down the fake Thames. | |
