The Bartel Sisters' balancing; trapeze & acrobatics act; c. 1907. Stage setting that looks like fancy interior, w/ trompe l'oeil painting on back wall; 2 chubby (well; fat) but limber and coordinated young women perform a variety of wild funny or dangerous stunts; assisted by male helpers. In 1 stunt; girl hangs upside down (we can't see what she's hanging from) apparently holding with her teeth a chain hooked to a pole w/ a swing on each end; she spins round; w/ 2 boys sitting on the swings! CU's of the other sister performing handstands; backbends; etc. on top of a piano bench. The 1st girl climbs pole to tiny platform; then bends over backward until she topples off ; she lands on her feet below. Girl does a few trapeze tricks; hangs holding man; etc. Girl does backbend then "runs" round her hands in a circle in sorta a precursor to "breakdancing" -- this looks really weird - I mean crazy, like it's just a torso surrying around. Finally girl enters w/ a cartwheel; picks up a chair w/ her teeth and swings it round her head a few times like a complete maniac! Really bizarre & hilarious.
