| Description: | THE BREAKING POINT - STRESS TESTS Machines are used to test the breaking point of various metals. Machines which measure stress needed to break building materials. MS Man operating large press machine. MS another man stands by another machine, turning a wheel. CU man 's hands holding a tape measure over a steel bar held between 2 blocks; titles tell us that the bar was originally 10" long. Machine stretches the bar; it grows over 2" longer and then snaps in two. ECU the broken bar. Impact tester. MS man pulls back a weight and hooks it; it's hanging from a thing like a swingset. CU a small bar of steel held standing up in a clamp. Title tells us this is "mild steel"; the heavy block comes swinging at it and it bends but doesn't break. Test is repeated with "hardened" steel; this time it breaks easily. MLS man wearing safety glasses operating a big vertical press. CU brick standing on end in the press; pressure increases from above until the brick crumbles and breaks. (Title said 28,000 lbs pressure.) Slow-motion of brick breaking - it almost seems to explode! | |
