| Description: | THE CHARCOAL BURNERS - A JAPANESE SIDELIGHT Wood is made into charcoal in Japan. Charcoal making by traditional methods in Japan. LS 2 men on wooded hillside, chopping down a tree. MS one man chopping w/ axe while another man saws on other side of trunk. LS tree falling. MS the 2 men sawing the trunk in sections. MLS they load the log sections on their backs and walk away. MS back view men walking away through forest - looks like piles of logs moving. MS man kneels as he loads wood into oven built into a rock wall, poking the logs in w/ a pole. MCU pole scooping the smouldering chopped up wood out of the oven. This wood then gets water dumped on it, and the worker scoops it all around in a pile, w/ much smoke rising from it. LS tilt down: 2 workers loading the pieces into straw baskets and dump these into a "straw barrel". MS same. LS worker setting out for town carrying the straw barrel full of charcoal on his back. Man carrying his load down hill through woods. | |
