| Description: | THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY CONFERENCE (Reel 2) Lord Woolton giving his last speech as Chairman of the Conservative Party. Bournemouth, Dorset MS Lord Woolton, addressing the Conservative Party Conference for the last time as Chairman of the Party. He stands to applause at the podium. CU Woolton makes a speech, handing over his role to the Chairman and Vice-Chairman and outlines the task ahead. Lord Woolton: “.. the conference itself, I must say a word because … Under the two great Prime Ministers who have led us. Now ladies and gentlemen, I leave you because I believe we’re at the beginning of a new era, a calling for the energy as well as for the outlook of younger men. I commend to you the new Chairmen, Mr. Oliver Poole and the new Vice Chairman Donald Kaybury, both of whom have been my dear colleagues in these past years. They will carry on the torch and with their capacity and with their energy, it will burn the brighter. The task ahead for them, and for you ladies and gentlemen, is thrilling, enthralling even if it is often exacting. The country… Here then you younger people, you privileged people, here then are the tools for the job, and you have a leader with his personality and his outlook, symbolizes all that is meant by the new, the modern conservative movement. And what does it mean? To me it means a new confidence in this country and the Commonwealth as a force for peace. A new stream of opportunity with wealth flowing in ever widening circles. And above all, a sense of care and responsibility for the old, the weak, the unfortunate and for the children of the country. All this, all this and all these things we have started on the road. The impetus and the carry foreward belongs to you, to youth, and to you ladies and gentlemen. I leave you with much gratitude. I thank you for the support that you have given me and if I may judge the speeches of today rightly, I thank you for the affection in which you have given it to me. (Applause) Thank you very much." (Applause) LS Audience give him a standing ovation and a woman at the microphone leads the conference in singing "For he's a jolly good fellow" The gentlemen attending the conference join in singing. | |
