| Description: | THE DECOY LETTER Western melodrama. United States of America Soldier at a saloon buys a drink from the woman bartender; wife of the innkeeper. As he pays her; he tries to kiss her. She struggles w/ him; her husband enters & throws the soldier out. Man & wife stand outside their log cabin saloon. Next; the scoundrel soldier in camp;w/ group of soldiers & 1 "Indian" reclining on ground round campfire; horses stand nearby. Villain writes the "decoy letter" to lure the saloon keeper away from home. Hands it to the Indian who runs off. Soldier enlists his friends to come with him Back at the saloon; Indian delivers letter. Man prepares to leave helped by wife & servant (another Indian). Man mounts horse & rides away. Bad Indian motions for the soldiers to enter saloon. They all come in; drink; tell servant to get the wife. She enters; villain tries to attack her while his friends throw servant out door. The woman gets one of their swords and defends herself from this implied threat of rape; fencing w/ all the soldiers; meanwhile; the good Indian runs after his master & brings him back. By the time they arrive she's killed all but 2 of the bad guys. He shoots through window at other 2 who run away. Man & wife have tearful reunion etc.; loyal servant staggers in. In a way a feminist film or at any rate a strong female character who wins duels; defends herself. Stereotyped images of Native Americans. | |
