| Description: | MS. American Ambassador giving "Speech of Thanks" American Ambassador John Hay Whitney (nat.snd.) Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip seated to American Ambassador's left (right of screen). “Your Royal Highness, Your Excellencies, Mr. Mayor, Mr. Chairman, Your Graces, My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen. I had a suspicion coming here this evening, that this might easily be the high point of my public life. Particularly in view of the fact that this is my first test match that is taking place. But I did not have any idea how warmly I would be welcomed and I would like to say that I’m grateful in that connection to modern science, because the one thing lacking in this great moment for me is that my wife is not here to share with me the welcome that I have had. But I strongly suspect that if the set’s working all right she is hearing it and sharing with me the great honor that you are affording me. (Applause) Because I am here tonight as a representative of one of the English speaking peoples and as Mr. Batton has suggested although our way of doing it might not be know as ‘the Queen’s English’, I would not want anybody to think that it is not out of respect and admiration for her Majesty and her subjects. (Some low laughter) I am here to contribute toward he high purpose of international cooperation to which the English Speaking Union is dedicated. I regard it as a high honor to participate in coming Lord Ismay who has so long and brilliantly guided the growth of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. … in the tribute being paid tonight to him and the Lady Ismay, and I desire to applaud most warmly The English Speaking Union for making this occasion possible and also for its powerful efforts in promoting mutual understanding between out peoples not only here and in my country but throughout the world. And on behalf of my wife and myself, I wish to thank not only this distinguished gathering, but the many others in this country who have overwhelmed us with their kindness and made us feel so very welcome.” | |
