| Description: | Begins w/ cartoon version of popular conception of the "casting couch". Girls sitting in a row outside manager's office. Uniformed clerk/office boy comes out and beckons, and one of the aspiring actresses enters. The middle-aged balding pudgy theatrical manager motions for her to come sit on his knee. When she spurns his lecherous advances, he pulls a lever which opens a trap door under her feet! She falls down a tunnel and lands out in the alley. The next applicant kisses the manager's bald head, sits on his knee, and is rewarded w/ a contract for £1000 per week! Title tells us that in reality, the theatrical managers are just like other business people. MLS Mr. C.B. Cochran in his office, going through his mail and giving instructions to a secretary. MS actresses seated in waiting room: funny middle aged character actress at rt., then a severe-looking exotic type w/ a monocle. MCU legs of these 2 - the older lady has silly pantaloons and striped stockings. MCU heads & shoulders of same. MCU ingenue in simple dress & cloche hat; a plainer girl beside her. LS man walks past the row of c. 10 women, motions to Miss Ingenue to come with him. When she leaves, the comic lady tries to run up and get her seat but the other women have all moved up one & she nearly sits on another woman's lap - like musical chairs. MLS ingenue in agent's office, shakes hands, sits for interview. He watches her walk back & forth. CU the agent picks up telephone. MLS young man enters office - titles say he is the "Producer" who will train the young hopeful - she exits w/ him. | |
