Lovely film showing the processes involved in making straw hats. Scieci, near Florence, Italy MLS group of women of various ages - some standing, some sitting- -all engaged in various stages of hat making, in front of house. MS women working; for ex. Middle aged woman is braiding long strands of thick grass together (and also talking and laughing) while younger woman trims off rough edges further down on this same braid (and also giggles a bit at something said by the older lady - -her mother? Other women in shot braiding. MCU young woman sits braiding. ECU her hands braiding grass together. MCU another woman's lap- -she is starting to make hat; she threads needle through one end of a braid. Series of shots as hat progresses; she works outward from center of crown, sewing the braid into a spiral. She shapes crown over a mold. With crown on mold she continues sewing braid around, starting to make brim. Fits hat on mold again. When she completes brim she fits hat on another mold which curls brim up. She takes it off mold and is apparently making some finishing touches to edgeà.Same woman sewing in satin lining. She then holds the finished hat up to show inside and out to camera. | |
