THE MIKADO Gaumont Mirror item showing various scenes from a production of the Mikado. Early colour film using both tinted stock and stencil colour techniques. Gaumont Mirror Number 3 item.

Series title has a woman in a ballerina's outfit swinging in a hammock and smiling broadly. Text at the bottom reads: "Moving thro' the mirror clear, Shadows of the world appear. - Lady of Shallot." Item title reads: "The Mikado - re-dressed in 1720 Period Costumes." Mr Charles Ricketts A.R.A. has designed the costumes for this famous Gilbert and Sullivan Opera. The cast are as follows: Darrell Fancourt, Charles Goulding, Henry Lytton, Leo Sheffield, John Huntington, Elsie Griffin, Aileen Davis, Beatrice Elburn, Bertha Lewis and the D'Oyley Carte Company.

Various scenes from a production of the Mikado. Some are tinted pink, some are stencil colour. C/U of the "three little maids" - their kimonos and hats have coloured sections. They sing and dance. Two men sit with their backs to the audience and watch lots of women singing and dancing. They then turn around and face the audience. L/S of lots of women at leisure with fans. C/U of one woman having make up applied by another woman. The Mikado and Katisha enter and the women bow down to the ground. Dramatic wielding of fans occurs! Comedy scene with several members of the cast dancing and moving large fans around. Amber tint. M/S of Charles Ricketts working on the costume designs. We see him sitting at a table surrounded by his artwork. He smokes a cigarette. Intertitle reads: "The famous artist has no use for an ash tray." C/U of the bowl he uses to clean his brushes which has cigarette butts floating in it. A butler is beckoned on and he picks up the dirty water bowl and a tin of paint and takes them away. He returns with a bowl of clean water and another pot of paint. Over the shoulder shot of two of Mr Ricketts' designs as he throws a cigarette into the clean water bowl. C/U of the cigarette floating in the bowl. We see him painting. M/S of a wall which has his designs pinned on it. C/U of the artist standing in a doorway. He takes his glasses off and smiles. "The end" title.
