| Description: | GAZETTE "Off Portsmouth THE NAVY'S WONDER SHIP - £ 7,500,000 battleship "Nelson" - Flagship of the Home Fleet - goes aground for nine hours and then successfully re-floated." Portsmouth, Hampshire. Battleship Nelson at sea off Portsmouth, signaling with the lamp. It is too close to shore and a great effort is put into pushing it off coast. Seven tugs, several oil tankers and battleships are employed in this operation. Various shots of several ships surrounding Nelson in an attempt to help. Destroyers were ordered to sail at full steam past the grounded ship to create enough of a wake to lift it off, and one is seen flying past the ships trying to free her. Several more shots of battleship with ships around. Picture disappears and only the soundtrack remains until the end of item. Note: Quite badly damaged piece of film. | |
