| Description: | A graphic summary of the Republican Party's Nominating Convention. Highlights of GOPs gala, hundredth-anniversary Republican Convention. President Dwight D. Eisenhower is acclaimed by one million Chicagoans as he arrives in the windy city. The Midwest metropolis, scene of the President's first great political triumph in 1952, gives the chief executive an unforgettable welcome. A rousing ovation as the convention itself greets Ike and Mamie. In a stirring speech, the President strongly endorses the Republican bid to the nation. Following Ike's appearance, the convention nominates Vice-President Nixon as the standard bearer in the presidential campaign. Later Mr. Nixon announces his choice of U.N. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge as his running mate. With Nixon's first ballot victory and the choice by acclamation of Nixon and Lodge for the Republican candidates, the lines are drawn for what promises to be one of the most stirring and momentous presidential contests of the 20th century. I think it will be exciting and interesting campaign, but I'm optimistic of the outcome because I think people taking the situation of the United States and the World today, very seriously. And their right and they ought to. I think their worried about the world and its like a man who's going to have an operation, he wants the best doctors. And I think the voters will want to have in the White House the man who's the most experienced the most intelligent, the most trained, who's a real pro. Vice President Nixon speaks of President Eisenhower, "When I think of the burdens that he has carried, the responsibility, that has been his. When I think also of the splendid record he has made in every way, in particularly, the dignity, decently and immense good will and feeling and affection that he has brought to the Office of the Presidency. I realize for any man, be it Mr. Kennedy or myself, to follow in his foot steps will be a tremendous responsibility. A challenge that will be very difficult for us to meet." | |
