| Description: | THE POTATO PICKERS Various shots of the potato harvest. LS women workers in field, following along behind the plough (pulled by team of mules, with man walking behind holding onto plough handle) and picking up potatoes, putting them in baskets; a few men walk past next to row but they don't seem to be doing any work. MS tilt down from c. 2' in front of woman who is walking bent over and scrambling to gather potatoes into basket - almost seems like film is speeded up but it's just that her arm is moving so fast. WS field showing whole process - at left, the women walk along row gathering potatoes, then set the full baskets along side of row; a man walks along collecting the baskets and tossing them to a moving cart at rt. pulled by a draft horse. The motions are perfectly coordinated - the man picks up each filled basket and tosses it up to a man who is standing up in a the cart; he throws it so that the basket flips over and is caught upside down by the man in the cart as the potatoes fall into the cart. (A few titles at end refer to modern methods but that footage is missing.) | |
