| Description: | The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, dedicated in 1940 was the pride of the Northwest. Then the third longest suspension span, it came to be known as Galloping Gertie as it swayed in the winds sweeping up Puget Sound. Four months after it was dedicated those winds sent the bridge into a rhythmic dance of death - it literally shook itself to pieces. These pictures of the bridge's collapse have been acclaimed as some of the greatest ever filmed. After World War II a new bridge was built, but Galloping Gertie will be long remembered. Tacoma, Washington Looking down at the Tacoma Bridge. MS the bridge undulating. MLS caught in the center of the bridge is a Tacoma news paper man, Leonard Foxworth. MS Leonard Foxworth walking briskly to get off the bridge, he leaves his pet dog, Tubby to die. MS the bridge is really twisting and fluctuating all over the place. The bridge finely couldn't take the stress of twisting and undulating and falls into the water. POV - Ground level looking up at the broken apart bridge. Tacoma Bridge broke apart and collapsed to its demise on November 11, 1940 at 11:00 AM. | |
