| Description: | America's committment to relocation. A fascinating yet ultimately solutionless look at post-war America's penchant for uprooting and moving to another geographic location, and the resulting socio-economic effects on the structures of family and community. Let's not forget the psychological implications... which unfortunately the producers treat very lightly. Many professors, students and everyday adults are interviewed, and though their insights are as intriguing as they are disparate, the crux of the matter runs so much deeper than anyone can possibly surmise in a 20 minute film. Subjective CU shot of a car driving on a road (passing pavement and painted traffic lines). MS of a man carrying a lounge chair away from camera and to a moving van. MS's of several different families moving things (chairs, lamps, kitchen stoves, etc.) from their homes and onto moving vans. MS of a boy carrying a pet rabbit to a stationwagon; he places the adorable bunny in an open box and closes the hatchback. CU of a truck's payload being secured with chains. MS of a man attaching a hitch to a stationwagon. Tight LS's of cars and hitches driving on highways; CU's of the drivers. Tight LS's of various methods of moving one's belongings (trucks, vans, hitches, etc), cruising along highways. CU's of traffic signals changing; ECU's of the colored lights.......... MS's and CU's of a named (though not caught) sociologist standing on a sunny campus, talking to camera about issue at hand. CU's of college sociology students discussing the problem of incessant and recurrent uprooting (some share their personal experiences).......... MS's of a farmer and his two sons packing up an open truck; tight LS of the truck and a packed stationwagon leaving the farm. Great shot of highway traffic (smoggy and congested roadway).......... MS's of a silly sociologist (wearing a bowtie that would make former Sen. Simon blush) sitting in an office and talking (in an afflicted accent) about urban blight. Intercut with scenes of folks leaving poor rural areas for city bustle (good street scenes here, of people and buildings and communities becoming overtaxed and eventually running down from overpopulation).......... MS of a man and his friend moving a refrigerator from a house. MS of a woman talking to the camera about why they're leaving the blighted area; intercut with great shots of why: LS's of busy highways, tremendous construction and planning congestion. Tight LS of a U-Haul's bay doors being closed. Tight LS of the U-Haul on a rural road.......... unusual CU's of color picture postcards circa 1910, depicting the life of blacks in the South (essentially emphasizing their poverty and roots to slavery). CU of former Compton Mayor CHESTER CRANE talking to the camera about black migration. MS's of black and white students congregating on a campus patio (it seems the narrator called it the Compton University... is or was there such a place?). More CU's of the German sociologist and college students talking about American mobility.......... zooming (in) MS of a priest sermoning from a fancy pulpit during Sunday mass. Tight LS and MS's of the well-dressed and somewhat attentive flock, seated and listening. CU's of them as well as they think about all the places they've moved to and from (adults and children, some happy, most not... the dissolution of community is implied here). Tight LS of people exiting church.......... wide LS of a stationwagon and U-Haul hitch leaving a circumventive suburban area. | |
