Of course it's only a play but gives a good example of the cliches of British criminal courts. London LS pan on Old Bailey courtroom scene, w/ prisoner & guards in the dock, barristers in wigs, etc. MCU barrister stands speaking. MS young woman in witness box looks terrified as she answers, then starts to sob. MS judge speaking. LS all rise as jury retire to consider the evidence. LS same view: jury file back in. All rise. Judge enters. People are seated. MS jury; foreman stands speaking. (Title: "Guilty, my lord.") MCU prisoner stands in the dock looking stricken and nervous; pan on courtroom. MCU judge seated. MCU prisoner making empassioned plea. ("I swear before God I am not guilty of this crime!") then breaks down w/ his head in his hands. MCU judge; court official behind him places black cloth on his head (worn by judge when delivering capital sentence). Judge speaks (it's silent but we know he's saying the bit with all that cheery language about being taken to the place whence you came and hanged by the neck until dead and may God have - now the title frame insert- -"mercy on your soul.") WS pan on courtroom; suddenly a man comes running onto the floor, titles tell us he confesses and then kills himself with (gasp!) the missing gun! CU hand reaches down to pick up small pistol lying by hand of dead man. LS man looks at gun realising its identity. Iris out. MCU prisoner and his lover embrace, he leaning over the railing, she reaching up. Iris out.
