| Description: | THOSE REHEARSALS Rehearsal Scenes from "Belle of New York" at Daily's Theatre, featuring Lorna Hubbard, Patrick Waddington, Dorothy Ward, Molly Fisher, Johnny Schofield, Frederick Lloyds, etc. London, England MCU couple ( Lorna Hubbard, Patrick Waddington ) locked in embrace; the woman is leaning over backwards, supported by the man, as in a "dip". They smile at each other and kiss passionately. Dissolve to LS same, revealing that the embrace is being enacted on a stage set. A man in FG sits watching & glances at script and there is backdrop of painted city scenery. A conservatively dressed woman (Dorothy Ward?) rushes toward the kissing couple with expression of shock and the couple break apart. The woman (who is wearing very short shorts!) cowering behind the man who turns to face the new arrival. 2 other actors also appear by the couple. MCU the wronged woman speaking. Back to LS of scene, she continues speech. Dissolve to same view of stage. 2 new women drag over a nerdy looking guy, an older man also steps up, more talking. The angry woman grabs the lover to pull him toward her, but his girlfriend grabs his other arm. (Meanwhile the backdrop is being pulled up.) MCU man in sweater who had been sitting w/ script - evidently the director (Frederick Lloyd?). He points & gesticulates, speaking w/ exaggerated expressions - showing how he wants a part acted. CU director scrunches up his face, puts his fingers in his ears. MCU director shaking fists & raging. MS 2 young women powdering their faces, looking in small mirrors. Back to CU of the director w/ his fingers still in his ears, wincing. MCU director now seems to be trying to tear his hair out! C/U of director having a tantrum. "Every dance has to be explained in detail and practised until those shapely limbs have just the right amount of pep and snappiness." MLS director shows a little dance step to a group of chorus girls. WS tilt down: big crowd scene on stage; chorus girls enter and strike a pose like cheerleaders, clapping their hands. MLS from onstage: chorus girls drop down and start duckwalking around while the other actors dance in place, swinging their hips. LS tilt down: more duckwalking, then girls spring up and start dancing. MS dancers from waist down. MLS dancers in kickline. Side view same: girls continue high kicks. Tilt down from side balcony: 4 of the girls held in stiff poses on men's shoulders w/ legs up in the air, while various cast members dance hand in hand around them in a circle. Meanwhile crew members are carrying piece of scenery across stage. MS 2 men & woman at foot of stage; director enters, talks to large man ("impresario" J. Bannister Howard?) while pointing to stage where the interrupted love scene is being rehearsed. MCU the big man. "With a little light relief from Molly Fisher and Johnny Schofield." Molly Fisher & Johnny Schofield dance around the stage like a wild polka, while group of chorus girls sit on stage watching. Then he grabs her by one arm and one leg and spins her around. When he drops her she spins around on her rear. Then he stands w/ legs spread & knees bent, she comes running from behind, jumps onto his back, and they both fall down, sprawled on the ground. | |
