| Description: | Shaky, flashing dull in contrast and imagery Firing the opening gun in the Democratic 1948 campaign, pres. Truman is guest speaker at the Jefferson Jackson day dinner. He calls for progressive liberalism and challenges all groups to fight inflation, and to join his ten-year program of prosperity. Harry S Truman, Campaign Speech: This is a year of challenge. I propose that we meet that challenge head on. In the interest of business as much as any other group we must win the fight against inflation to avoid disaster. In the interest of business as much as any other group we must make the next 10 years a period of extraordinary achievement. The timid people say - "it can't be done". I say it can be done. And we of the forward looking trend must dedicate ourselves to the proposition that it will be done. A ten year program that I have outlined for American prosperity is founded on our faith and the ability of the American people to plan their future boldly and to move foreword steadfastly toward their goals. If anyone chooses to call this politics then it is the politics of Jefferson and Jackson, Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt and its good enough for me . | |
