| Description: | TUBNIK Brighton students launch the 'Tubnik I' a motorized bath-boat. Piddinghoe Lake in Newhaven, East Sussex Brief M/S of the Motorised Bath, driving along a street in Kingston, Surrey; commentator tells us "this bath caused a sensation when it was featured in Pictorial". At Piddinghoe Lake in Newhaven, East Sussex, we see M/S of a large group of students from Brighton walking along the grass. At the head of the group some young men carry a bathtub on their shoulders. Setting it down on the grass, the men fit a steel joist to the underside as a keel while the other students (mostly male with goatee beards) watch. M/S of a bearded student, Allan Witt, tying on his lifejacket; he also wears a sou'wester hat. M/S of students crowding round to watch as one of their pack, Mike Cohen, paints 'Tubnik I' on the inside of the bath and the taps are fitted. M/S of the 'Tubnik' on the lake, being launched by Jill Creswell with a bottle of milk; three pasty looking boys in swimming trunks stand thigh high in the lake and cheer; the other students crowd round the edge of the lake and whoop; some people take photos and a man is seen with a cine camera. In a rowing boat on the lake a boy rings a bell, another rows while wearing a silly hat with a scarf round it; the third man takes a photo. M/S as Allan climbs from another rowing boat into the bathtub; it has an outboard motor fitted at the tap end. Various shots of him speeding round the lake in the Tubnik. He comes to a sudden halt at one point, tipping the end of the bath into the water; cutaway to the crowd on the lakeside laughing. | |
