The Manor House Nursery School, Kingston Road, Merton, Surrey M/S of group of children gathered around a teacher in the school playground. Teacher is reading, children listening. Various shots of the children-teacher communication. This is not an ordinary class, this is a meeting of the "Tufty Club - Road Safety for Young Children " The club is creation of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents". Club is named "after the red squirrel who always tries to do the right thing". L/S of children singing "The Tufty Club Song". M/S of the children rising from their seats and walking towards the teachers and a man holding effigy of Tufty. He is an ex-policeman Mr. John Richardson, who believes that "Tufty is a life saver". C/U shot of Tufty's head as Mr. Richardson moves it to the left, then to the right, as if he is about to cross the road. M/S of the children moving their heads, repeating Tufty's movements. M/S of the little boys getting into colourful toy-cars. Several C/U shots of "The Tufty Club" badges attached to children's cardigans. Various M/S of the girls learning to cross the road on the improvised crossing (little road with zebra and yellow light poles at each side) while 'cars are passing'. M/S of the boys in their little cars and tricycles driving one after another in circles 'down the road'. Great shot of children driving towards the camera one by one. C/U on girls' feet crossing the zebra. "The Tufty Club certainly appeals to toddlers" - says the voiceover - "They soon learn that if they apply the rules learned on their own little road to the big roads outside - then they'll get home safely". | |
