| Description: | "In July 1985, the Twelfth World Youth Festival was held in Moscow. 157 countries were represented with 20,000 participants. General Secretary Gorbachev adressed the participants and spoke of the serious problems faced by people all over the world. Youth personify the springtime of humanity. The Festival was heavy on serious discussions, with various young people expressing themselves in varying political and philosophical views. There were delegates from Hiroshima, and NO MORE HIROSHIMAS appeals and signatures collected. Each of the 15 Soviet Republics was represented by singers and dancers, and national groups from all over the world performed. There was a sports program, sight-seeing, and much fraternizing by the young people from the same blue planet Earth." (01:00:08) Opening credits, title text superimposed over image of globe with Soviet Union in the forefront, title "Around the Soviet Union" displayed in many different languages. (01:00:52) Images of the 12th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow, aerial views and long shots of the stadium where the festival is held, the stadium is packed full, the seated crowd hold up different colored sheets to make different large images and texts, the crowds also wave flags, representatives from many different countries circle the stadium track, much like olympic teams, in uniform with a national banner - Cuba leads the march and the Soviets finish it, crowd using sheets makes a psychedelic spiral pattern that changes colors (01:03:09) Two speakers address the festival, a torch is carried by convertible then elevator to a larger torch atop the stadium by the daughter of YURI GAGARIN and worker from the Urals, meanwhile the crowd using their different colored sheets form images of the earth, then of Red Square (01:04:15) General Secretary MIKHAIL GORBACHEV addresses the festival, good medium shot of leader reading his address (01:05:20) Long shot of the Kremlin, youth meet and talk on Red Square (01:06:12) At a convention held in an auditorium various young people address a crowd on the need to end military build up across the world, a panel attacks world imperialism, outside youth sign a "No More Hiroshimas" appeal (01:08:20) Solidarity rallies are held outside on the steps of a large columned building by and for various political organizations and causes, First Secretary of the Soviet Young Communist League calls for world peace - this footage is interspersed with close up shots of the diverse audience (01:10:28) Shots of the American - Soviet youth meeting where both sides happily agree peace is necessary, American boys are served traditional cake by girl dressed in traditional Russian costume (01:11:12) Shots of the youth festival's art center which briefly features a Russian band and a couple of painters painting canvases (01:11:51) Youth festival's sporting events, young men play soccer for an enthusiastic audience, girl's ribbon dancing and brief shot of some girl's gymnastics, boy's gymnastics - a group of young men form a human column four people high, young women play basketball outside (01:12:58) Folk part of festival brings out traditional cultural performances of music and dance by various ethnic groups including those of the Soviet Union, Asia and Africa, all the folk performers end up parading down a street together (01:14:36) Children draw outside on sidewalks with chalk (01:15:03) Different political groups march down the streets with banners for their causes singing and chanting songs for their respective causes, a band of acoustic guitarists play and sing on stage a political song in Spanish (01:16:57) Back at the large stadium the crowd with the different colored sheets form more colorful images, youth festival members parade on the stadium field with banners, a marching band performs, ballerinas peform on multiple stages as at their feet people in costume come together in various formations to be appreciated by an aerial view, this grand finale also brings out large inflated clowns whose feet are actually cars, a fake band appears with giant plaster caricature heads and instruments, other floats of waving people make up this finale, excited audience member shots are interspersed through out (01:18:56) A comtemporary Soviet pop song is played in the youth festival's last hoorah, participants line the field and they with audience members wave banners and sparklers as fireworks are set off above the stadium (01:20:21) Credits role | |
