| Description: | UGANDA Barkcloth fabric and shoes are made from tree bark in Uganda. MS young man or teenage boy wearing a robe which goes over one shoulder, is tied at the waist, and reaches down to the knees. He is stripping bark off thin tree, using a primitive tool. More trees in BG. He then walks toward camera, holding bark in front of him and pulling on it to spreading it flat. MLS elderly man squats on ground beating on big piece of bark laid over a log. Another old man and the young man sit beside him watching. MLS African men showing large piece of barkcloth to a white couple, in a clearing surrounded by grass-roof houses. Other Ugandans doing various things in BG in this sort of village square or marketplace. The white people are wearing typical Europeans wearing a safari outfit with shorts, shirt, knee socks, pith helmet and woman in long white dress, wearing wide-brimmed hat and carrying folded parasol. Some of the Africans wear robes such as that described before, and some men wear what must be Muslim style clothing, white ankle length robes and fez type hats. MS man squats in the dirt using a stick shaped like a sharp hook as a hatchet to chop a block of wood; behind him is an interesting woven wall of a building. MS tilt down: man using his feet to brace wood as he carves it further. He then shows that he has made a flat wooden shoe. LS Ugandan man walking toward camera from grass hut; in FG a pair of wooden shoes are next to a tree. MCU tilt down: shoes, which now have knobs sticking up on the top. MCU man holding up shoes, shows them to camera. MLS man sets shoes on ground again and steps into them. The knobs go between 1st and 2nd toes. He walks on toward cam & off to rt. | |
