In the dark days of 1940, when all Western Europe from the North Cape of Norway to the Pyrenees had succumb to Nazi oppression, our country Britain, sheltered by the channel, remained alone as a bastion of freedom and as a rallying point for all who were determined to fight on. There were many thousands of these people in the occupied countries. … Early in 1941, with some Free French soldiers already under training … but there was no lack of volunteers for this hazardous and lonely work. Both men and women, eager to get to grips with the enemy, were fighting in our own homeland, France. Here in this house they were briefed for their tasks. Here they spent their last hours or days before their departure, waiting for the final message, to say that the weather was right and all was ready for their reception in France. … whose task was to unite all resistance in one body. Pierre Brossolette as the chief organizer in the occupied zone. Both were destined to die after torture, without revealing their country secrets or betraying their companions at arms.
