VS of the Republican Party convention(RNC) at Philadelphia under the chairmanship of Joe Martin. The first candidate named for the Republican Presidential nomination is Tom Dewey; "...and so with earnestness and confidence, we ask you to nominate as the Republican Candidate for the Presidency the nation's favorite son: Thomas E. Dewey of New York. Applause." The crowd waves banners in support of the candidate. This is followed by the nomination of Senator Robert A Taft of Ohio; "Ohio..Ohio...Mother of Presidents brings to this convention its distinguished son, a great American: Senator Robert A. Taft." The crowd waves banners in support of the candidate. Then Wendell Wilkie is nominated; "I'd say I want to place in nomination before this great independent body the name of the next president of the United States: Wendell Louis Wilkie." After the Willkie nomination, a scuffle breaks out which police are called in to control. It takes six ballots before Wilkie emerges as the winner. Chairman Joe Martin says, "The vote is taken in Michigan which I am now announcing is as follows: Hoover -1; Taft - 2; Wilkie - 35." A delegate from Pennsylvania says, "Mr. Chairman, Pennsylvania casts 72 votes for Wendell Wilkie. Cheering" Ohio concedes defeat and moves for a uniamous vote; "The motion I made now seeming to be in order but unnecessary, I renew Ohio moves that thee nomination of Wendell Wilkie be made uniamous. Cheering." Another man asks "Are you in favor of making the nomination of Wendell Wilkie uniamous?, kindly say aye." Resounding "Aye" heard as man says, " CU Willkie speaking, "I am very thankful. I am also overwhelmed." | |
