01.01.37-Dr. Lewis Thomas, director of Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, recalls his father's career as a General Practitioner, at the dawn of the age of "scientific medicine" and the advent of DIAGNOSIS-CENTERED MEDICINE and then the advent of ANTIBIOTICS that revolutionized medicine. Discusses advances of treating SYPHILIS and TUBERCULOSIS, compares these developments to modern advances in understanding of MICROBIOTIC and BIOCHEMICAL natures of diseases. Dr. D. Frederickson former director of NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH discusses the advances against HEART DISEASE through surgery and cardiology.
