| Description: | WHATS IN A NAME Item traces the origin of some popular names and their meanings. London A woman in an apron yells for 'BASIL!' A grubby boy appears, wipes his nose with his finger and says "Wotcher want?". C/U of the meaning of 'Basil' in a name book - it means 'kingly'. Cut back to the grubby boy, wearing a crown and carrying a sceptre. Several animated drawings give us the meaning of different names, such as Amos, Harry, Ada, Constance and Hortense. Numerous place names appear on the left-hand side of the screen as we are challenged to pronounce them correctly, and out loud! They include Abergavenny, Charteris and Cirencester. The correct pronunciations appear on the right. More animation shows the percentage of men's names in 1380. Live footage of a prisoner being attended to by a make-up artist, before having a number hung around his neck and his mug shot taken. He grins for the camera, then goes back to his usual miserable face. The same man is seen in 'Puritan' (1600s?) costume, holding up a placard with his numerous names written on it. A pretty girl in costume of the same era holds up a card with her names. Commentator wonders "Who would call her names?". | |
