| Description: | At his news conference President Kennedy makes the announcement that the United States will sell surplus wheat to Russia and her satellites. The $310,000,000 purchase will be from tons in storage while at the same time benefit the U.S. Balance-of-Payments Deficit. A parade of combines harvesting the wheat somewhere in the Mid-West. MS - The combine transferring the wheat into an open bed truck. MS - A huge pile of harvested wheat. MCUS - A truck unloading the harvested wheat. MCUS - Wheat unloading into the hull of a cargo ship. MCUS - President Kennedy standing at a podium. President Kennedy, "This transaction advertises to the world as nothing else could, the success of free American aquaculture. That demonstrates our willingness to relieve food shortages. To reduce tensions and to improve relations with all countries and it shows peaceful agreements with the United States which serves the interest of both sides, are far more worth while course than a course of isolation and hostility. In short this particular decision with respect to sales to the Soviet Union, which is not inconsistent with many smaller transactions over a long period of time, does not represent a new Soviet - American trade policy. That must await the settlement of many matters, but it does represent one more hopeful sign, that a more peaceful world is both possible and beneficial to us all." | |
