| Description: | PREVIEW # 210470 A DEDICATED TO THE THOUSANDS OF GOOD CITIZENS IN POLITICS WHO MAINTAIN OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT... AND TO THE MILLIONS WHO SHOULD JOIN THEM. Famed American attorney JOSEPH WELCH conducts an eye-opening foray into the world of political nomination, campaigning and election, based upon the sudden and inexplicable political rise of John Doakes (a fictional character). Opening montage of a FOLKS FOR DOAKES stationwagon driving through a small town, a large amplifier mounted on the hood and playing a campaign song: MS's of amps and decorations and signs slathered on car; MS's of people opening windows and sticking their heads out for a better view; MS's of children running towards the car, following it and eventually surrounding it; MS's of adults exiting stores to lend their attention; CU's of switches being flicked in a voting booth........ MS's of Mr. Welch talking to the camera in a law library (a frequent occurance as he is the narrator).......... MS's of a husband and wife at home in their living room, watching Doakes vs. Smith election results on the TV (watching tv, couple watching television); CU's of the TV and broadcast. Though tending to her manicured nails the wife grows bored and wants him to change the station, which he does, opting for a ceremoniously action-packed Western drama (some great stunts as cowboys destroy a saloon while trying to destroy one another). A Special Bulletin interrupts programming; a newscaster breaks the news of Smith's concession. Zooming MS in Doakes HQ as people celebrate with streamers and a rousing rendition of FOR HE'S A JOLLY GOOD FELLOW. Cut to CU's and MS's of a man-on-the-street TV newscaster interviewing disgruntled constituents following Doakes' election......... Night: MS of a man and woman walking on a street, passing a photography shop; he stops to light her cigarette; tilt U to lit second floor windows where a public caucus is being held. MS's of several political party leaders sitting at a table and trying select a candidate; men deliberating, discussing the "good of the party"......... CU's of VOTE FOR DOAKES buttons being pinned to lapels. MS of camapign poster being nailed to wall. CU of a water jug being placed by a gavel. Wide MS of a Doakes campaign team meeting being called to order; MS's of folks at meeting, men and women, many smoking cigarettes; MS's of team leader at a chalkboard, breaking down primary percentage numbers and how many people they need to secure to win (astonishing numbers).......... MS's of a "do-nothing" family happily avoiding politics in their white, suburban, middle-class home (Mom and Dad sip coffee from tiny cups while junior does his homework on the floor; Dad doesn't have time to discuss the difference between a poltician and a statesman with junior as they're late for dinner at the Davis').......... MS's of Doakes campaign workers masquerading as pollsters going door-to-ddor with candidate info. MS's of Doakes attending a socialite tea luncheon (basically placating the votes of the mothers and wives of the community). MS's and CU's of people standing in line at a voting poll; a bird-like man is denied a vote because he failed to register after moving. MS's inside a Doakes committee meeting after his victory in the primaries. CU of several Doakes buttons spinning against a black BG. CU of a printing press printing campaign pamphlets. CU of people stuffing envelopes. MS of two men at typewriters in Doakes HQ. MS of Doakes on TV, awkwardly delivering a campaign speech. MS of Doakes workers on phones at HQ. More MS's inside a voting poll on election day; excellent MS's and CU's of a confused and undecided man in the voting booth. | |
