| Description: | World War One Women war workers pageant through streets of the West End in London; ca. 1916. Women all dressed in costumes portraying famous women; etc. Crowds line streets to see parade. Opens with woman wearing armor; riding on white horse; carrying standard; a la Joan of Arc. Another woman walks next to her in some Grecian(?) costume; carrying a shiny pointed thing. Girls wearing plain jumpers; medeival type costumes. Woman on horseback with flag. Line of horses pulling wagons with women on the back reenacting tableaux. Another "float" with sign "The Sister Nations" and somehting about Queen Alexandra. Then several women in regular street clothes carrying banners urging "Hughes" to return-- "The People Call You Back". (Only Hughes at this time that comes to mind is Australian P.M. but this is likely another.) Then a group of women in white dresses; bonnets; etc.; carrying long poles with bouquets on top. | |
