The retirement of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has brought increased attention to the make-up of the Supreme Court. WPA’s collection includes extensive footage of some Senate confirmation hearings, as well as historic footage of past Justices.

Chief Justice John Marshall established the authority of the nascent Supreme Court. Crucial decisions in the early years of the court showed the power of the court to interpret the Constitution.

Most Supreme Court justices are virtually unknown before their tenure on the court. The greatest exception is former President William Howard Taft who served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the 1920s.

Over the years the number of justices on the court has changed several times. In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt proposed adding additional justices. Critics accused him of trying to pack the court with members favorable to his New Deal policies.
