Two New Collections Available From WPA
|
| The WPA Film Library is proud to announce two new additions to its vast archive that are sure to make your mouth water - footage from the PBS series Water, The Drop of Life, as well as a collection of gorgeous underwater footage. Both collections are contemporary, and are shot on film (Super 16mm). Water, the Drop of Life, produced and released by PBS in 2000, is a six-part documentary that travels the world to examine what will inevitably become the single greatest issue to face mankind in the 21st Century: the social, economic, cultural, and agricultural impact of water. Using stunning footage shot on location all over the world in conjunction with interviews of personalities such as journalist Isabel Allende, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, former Prime Minister of Israel Shimon Peres, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, actor/activist Ted Danson, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Queen Noor of Jordan and Body Shop founder Anita Roddick, Water, the Drop of Life explores the complex global issues of water use and conservation. The cultural and spiritual meaning of water is illustrated with footage of a Japanese tea ceremony, baptisms in the River Jordan, Wudu, a purification ritual performed outside a mosque before prayer, Hindu Indians bathing and praying in the Ganges River and cremations in Varanasi. Footage surrounding water conservation and recycling, farming and irrigation, and water pollution is also part of the series; as well as lots of exquisitely shot location and wildlife footage from locations like the Ecuadorian rainforest and South Africas Nambi Desert. The second newly catalogued collection takes viewers underwater to view the fascinating, hypnotic flora and fauna at the bottom of the ocean. Shot on location in such far-flung climates as the Galapagos Islands, the Philippines, Hawaii, Bahamas, Belize, Sea of Cortez, South Africa, Australia, Patagonia, Cape Hatteras (NC) and Indonesia, this collection features almost 100 hours of contemporary scenic and oceanic wildlife imagery, much of it filmed by intrepid, daring divers. Sharks, dolphins, whales, seals, turtles and exotic tropical fish, as well as land-based primates, lizards and birds, are captured in their native habitats by skilled cinematographers using an adventurous, though environmentally respectful eye. Picturesque locations, cultures and ephemera complement the underwater footage. |
