"Skyscrapers of New York City, from the North River" Shot from a moving boat, the film depicts the Hudson River (i.e., "North River") shoreline and the piers of lower Manhattan starts around Fulton Street and extends to Castle Garden Battery Park. It begins at one of the American Line piers (Pier 14 or 15, opposite Fulton Street) where an American Line steamer is docked, then on past various docks; can also see buildings of Lower Manhattan in BG, incl. the double towers of the Park Row, or Syndicate Building, the Surety Building & just to its right Trinity Church ( as a tug with a "C" on the stack passes in FG.) Pass several small steamboats docked , and the B.T. Babbitt Soap factory, then the Pennsylvania Railroad piers and the Lehigh Valley Railroad piers, both with docked railroad car floats. The Whitehall Building (vertical, thin side to camera), followed by Pennsylvania Railroad Pier #1., then the United Fruit Company at New Pier 1. Pier A (with a clock tower); we pass very near to end of pier where there is a New York Harbor Police steam boat "Patrol" at its end. The New York City Fireboat House, then Castle Garden (the distinctive round structure). The camera then pans east along the Battery Park promenade: the Barge Office (with tower) is visible in the distance, and further out the Brooklyn shoreline with the grain elevators at Atlantic Avenue can be seen.
"Move On." Nice 'slice of life' look at pushcart vendors on New York's Lower East Side, 1903. Film is of a street where several Jewish and Italian pushcart vendors have gathered to sell their goods; in FG fruit and vegetable carts; part of El track in BG. There's a lot of other activity as well - - pedestrians on the sidewalk walking past many small shops, and crossing the street, horse-drawn carts, a young guy tossing some small object up and catching it. 2 Policemen come up the street and order all of the vendors to move. One cop approaches twirling his nightstick, and the cart in the foreground begins moving. The film ends with CU of cop scolding the vendor, shaking his fist. (That last part seems sorta exaggerated - - like it might have been a bit of acting for the camera.)

Burnham and Company, filmed shortly after its completion in 1902. This shows a view looking across the intersection of Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd St.; nice busy street scene, with pedestrians, trolleys (street cars), horse-drawn carriages; Flatiron Building in near BG; slow tilt upward from street level scene along 21 stories to top of Flatiron building. The Flatiron is known as the first great steel-framed building, and is a New York City landmark.

"Panorama Waterfront and Brooklyn Bridge from East River." Film of East River shoreline and the piers of lower Manhattan shot from a boat starting at about Pier 5 (the New York Central Pier) and going up to just south of the Brooklyn Bridge. The film begins at Pier 5, barges docked at and around Coenties Slip . We go past piers w/ various ships and boats incl. steam tugs, a wooden hull barkentine with box barges alongside, a docked iron hull sailing ship, an ocean steamer, a derrick lighter with stacked barrels docked at the end of a pier in FG, etc. In the Wall Street Ferry slip (between Piers 15 and 16) is a double-ended steam commuter boat (the ferry is just to left of row of billboards (illegible) on Pier 16. On front of Piers 16 & 17 "NY & Cuba Mail SS Co." and there is a steamship and quite a few other boats around them. The Mallory Line piers, with one of their steamers on the south side of one of the Mallory Piers. The camera begins panning to rt. out over the East River ; can see the fog bell at the end of pier 21 and pans along Brooklyn Bridge (built late 1880s)
Pedestrians on a Windy Day in NYC, Filmed on a VERY windy day on the sidewalk outside the Flatiron, or Fuller Building at B'way & 23rd, where a constant stream of pedestrians pass by in various directions clutching hats and skirts against the wind. This narrow triangular corner of he building houses a shop with large windows on both sides. There is a large shop window displaying ---? An African-American man turns to look at camera as he walks past and his hat blows completely off! He chases it offscreen. More people walking by struggling with the wind; one is a policeman A woman stops next to the bldg trying to look at a paper. NOTE: An interesting etymological theory: According to some New York City historians, this corner was known as the windiest corner of the city, and standing on it was considered a good vantage point for a glimpse of a lady's ankle when her long skirt blew . Policemen would chase away such loungers from the 23rd Street corner, giving rise to the expression "twenty-three skidoo."
Bargain Day Crowd at 5 & 10 Cent Store Bargain hunters pushing their way into a sale - -hundreds of tightly packed people crowding into the front door of the Rothschild Co. 5 and 10 cent store in New York City, 1905. They are so closely packed it is difficult to tell one from another - -just one amorphous mass of shoppers. The view is from across the street, looking down from the 2nd floor.
