Linda Wertheimer report - The Inter-American Foundation is an arm of Congress that gives small aid grants to Latin America. Reagan appointees on the board have rebelled to try to fire the head of the foundation.

It was about Mr. Bell s ability to take the foundation in the manner and the direction which the majority of the board wanted to go. Representative Dante Fascell (D - Florida) on the Inter-American Foundation. It became entirely different from an ordinary aid program because the private board ran it and had control over it. And it was without regard to the short term foreign policy objectives of the United States and without regard to politics. So that in dealing with people overseas, they would not think it was a government instrumentality.

And they wanted to put a different cast to it.
