U.S. House Representative Ron Dellums (D-CA) speaking: "...Now there are three brief comments I want to make. I join with all my colleagues in voting for a Sense of Congress Freeze Resolution, but let's understand that this planet is in mortal danger of a nuclear war for several reasons. We are going beyond deterrence to war fighting capability. We are going beyond verification to non-verification. And we are talking about the deployment of weapons that, if placed where this administration wants to place them, will take this world in a quantum fashion closer to the brink of nuclear disaster. We can talk about a bi-lateral nuclear freeze, but we don't need to negotiate with the Soviet Union to know that MX missile is an insane weapon that costs billions of dollars and needs to be rejected. We don't need to negotiate with the Soviet Union to know that the cruise missile is an exotic form of technology that goes way beyond verification. And, finally, we don't need to negotiate with the Soviet Union to know to deploy the Pershing missile four to six minutes from the Soviet Union is dangerous and provocative, and would take the world closer to the brink of nuclear disaster. And I ask you to reject all this madness." Large American flag banner in BG.

U.S. House Representative Ron Dellums (D-CA) continuing to speak to crowd: "Secondly, the absence of nuclear weapons will take us closer to peace, but it will not ensure it. It is not just the absence of nuclear weapons that will bring peace, but it is the absence of conditions in this world that give rise to violence and war. Two-thirds of the world live in abject poverty. Millions of people starve to death. We are still talking about militarizing El Salvador and South Africa. We must reject that madness in our voices, free and loud, for world peace. And thirdly, it costs something develop these weapons. And poor people and unemployed people cannot eat MX missiles. Children cannot learn from B1 bombers. The sick cannot be healed from Pershing missiles. And so I ask you to join with me today in not only rejecting the madness of the nuclear arms race, but the entire insanity upon which this military budget is developed...Let's have peace, and peace now!" Rep. Dellums waves, walks across stage, past Rep. Claudine Schneider (R-RI) and two other adult Caucasian men, shaking hands with U.S. Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) before getting off stage; banner of American flag as stage backdrop. Adult Caucasian male introducing the next speaker, Rep. Schneider; adult Caucasian men and women standing on steps with U.S. Capitol Building in BG.

Citizens Lobby for a U.S./Soviet Nuclear Weapons Freeze rally on the U.S. Capitol Building stairs, U.S. Representative Claudine Schneider (R-RI) speaking to crowd: "I have one important message. I have many of my constituents here in this audience who are here to tell me to keep on doing what I'm doing, and so far the nuclear freeze is enough. Insofar as talking about the nuclear freeze, that is not enough. Insofar as voting for the nuclear freeze, that is not enough. And we know that actions speak louder than words. That is it incumbent upon all of us members to mobilize, to organize, and to move ahead by educating and influencing as many of our decision makers as we possibly can to get the decision on our side. To get the public to understand, and the decision makers to understand, that there is no future without a nuclear freeze. It is also heartbreaking to me to note that I have received more letters on the ten percent withholding provisions on interest in dividends than I have on the nuclear arms freeze. But what we have to know is that my constituents don't have to write to me, but we need to make sure that each and every elected official sitting in these buildings has the message from you. You have to bring more people to Washington next time. You have to write more letters to your representatives, and we've got to keep on going until we turn the situation around, and until this effort succeeds. I'm going to do everything I can, and I encourage all of you to go, go, go! Thank you." Rep. Schneider leaves while adult Caucasian male approaches podium to announce the next speaker; American flag banner as stage backdrop.

Citizens Lobby for a U.S./Soviet Nuclear Weapons Freeze rally on the U.S. Capitol Building stairs, U.S. House Representative Ron Dellums (D-CA) watching rally with adult Caucasian women and adult African American men, one of whom comes to shake hands with Rep. Dellums; adult male, off camera, introduces U.S. Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) as next speaker. Sen. Cranston, American flag banner as stage backdrop: "...I run for President of United States deeply committed to the proposition that we can and must end this nuclear nightmare. No President of the United States has ever placed the task of negotiating an end to the nuclear arms race-- first a freeze, then a reduction-- with the Soviet Union at the very forefront of an American administration. I will. I led the fight on the Foreign Relations Committee last year for the freeze resolution. I will lead it again on the Foreign Relations Committee this year. I'm not sure how we'll do now, but with your help we will build the strength so that before too long the Senate can call on the House in passing a freeze resolution." Adult Caucasian men and women listening to Cranston speak.

Citizens Lobby for a U.S./Soviet Nuclear Weapons Freeze rally on the U.S. Capitol Building stairs, unidentified adult Caucasian male on stage, stepping to podium to make an announcement; American flag banner as the stage backdrop: "Let me just begin by saying that ten minutes ago, the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted 27-9 in favor of the nuclear freeze." Loud cheers erupt at the news. Speaker continues: "Someone once observed that war is too important a business to be left exclusively to generals. By your presence today, and by actions of the American people around the country, it's very clear that the message to Washington is that arms control that is survival is too important a concern to be left to a few politicians. Probably the most mischievous notion in modern politics is that somehow we're in an inferior position with the Soviet Union. That there's a window of vulnerability out there that jeopardizes the lives and the safety of American citizens. As Charles Dickens would have said, 'This is humbug.' When you have the capacity to destroy the world many, many times over, there's no such notion as inferiority. A human being can only die once. Finally, let me just stress that the nuclear freeze movement is not intended to undercut any President's negotiating position. Instead, its intended to bolster the notion that any President of the United States will not have a political liability for being for arms control, for restraint, for a future for all Americans, all Russians, and all living citizens on the face of the Earth. Thank you very much." Speaker leaves stage as another man makes his way back to podium. Crowd of adult and young adult Caucasian men and women standing behind wooden barricade; general announcements are made off-camera; middle-aged adult Caucasian man holding up sign representing the state of Tennessee.

Actress Colleen Dewhurst sitting on stage with two middle-aged adult Caucasian men; another man introduces her off-screen, American flag banner as stage backdrop. Dewhurst speaks: "The last time I stood on a podium like this was on June 12th. And I tell you, I think, probably, this is one we should be on in Washington. I am a professional woman. I have children. I am a naturalized citizen of these United States. I chose to become a citizen of these States because this United States had been good to me, and I knew this was the country that was run by the people of the United States. And I know, we know, the facts. We have heard them all. There is no need to try and confuse us any longer. Look at the people who speak for us; the scientists, the admirals, the generals, the philosophers, and the concerned politicians. And look at the ones who speak against us. And it is known as, would you buy a car from this man? We know what we are looking at, and we know what we are hearing. And now we will never stop being heard. We are the people, and we are saying, 'God knows we want to live.' We want our children to live. Do not fool around with us anymore. Remember the people today who did not happen to make it here to meet with us. Remember the men and women who did not do us the courtesy, or the respect, as their constituents, to be here to listen to us. That is the end of them because they will be the end of us. Go for us. Thank you." Dewhurst leaves stage, getting help from adult Caucasian man; two adult Caucasian men and one adult African American man taking pictures in FG.
