U.S. Senator and Presidential Candidate Gary Hart (D-CO) criticizes the establishment elements of both parties, worries if President Ronald Reagan is given another term, there may not be chance to save the country from disaster. The alternative choice diverges from two current paths: Reagan Republicanism that chooses prosperity only for the few and the traditional approach of some in the Democratic party which promises everything to everyone. Hart believes in policy of equal rights and social justice for all and an end to the arms race that threatens humanity. There comes a time to break from the past and step into the future. Sen. Hart recalls examples of standing with Martin Luther King Jr., John and Robert Kennedy, standing against the war in Vietnam, and pollution.

He sees the Democratic Party as representation of ordinary citizens, the party against concentrated power, that speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves. They are the party for civil rights and civil liberties, for women's equal rights, for the rights of the elderly and retirees when it comes to Medicare and Social Security, for social justice, public education, and environmentalism.
