1951 Sports Highlights. In a big year of sports, thrills and chills and spills provided plenty of spectator appeal, and from the tops of these, the editors of Universal newsreel select the most exciting sport events of 1951. Montage of various summer and winter sports scenes. Baseball: The story-book pennant finish of the New York Giants was one of the big sporting highlights of 1951. Climax to a dramatic race between the Dodgers and Durocher's 'miracle team' was the third play-off game, in which Bobby Thompson blasted his ninth-inning home run. Wow, you should see these players jump and skip like boys, so excited. Close shots men in the stands (spectators) cheering excitedly. Team carries player on its shoulders (presumably Bobby Thompson). Basketball: The big titans of the court, Brigham Young and Kentucky, were overshadowed by the story bigger than basketball itself -- the scandals that broke into the headlines. Football: Football had its scandal, too, with the West Point dismissals that wiped out a once-mighty grid team. But then there was Princeton's Dick Kazmaier, no. 42, hero of the season. Horse Racing: The richest Kentucky Derby in history brought a hitherto-unknown long-shot to the fore. Count Turf, hitting the jackpot, with slow-motion scenes recording his stunning upset victory. Golf: VS Ben Hogan golfing at Birmingham, posing with trophy. Boxing: The two-fisted drama of 1951 in boxing was the rise to power of the veteran Jersey Joe Walcott, who defeated Ezzard Charles to win the heavyweight title at Pittsburgh. Track and Field: Top man in the track & field was the 'skyclimbing parson' - Rev. Bob Richards of California, becoming the second man in history to top 15 feet in the pole vault. The athlete's celebration on achieving this goal is shown is slow motion. Jumping for joy.
